Day 1: Arrival in Cochin

  • Upon arrival at Cochin International Airport, you will be warmly greeted by our representative who will assist with your transfer to the hotel.
  • Once you check in and have had a chance to refresh, your exploration of Cochin begins.
  • Cochin, also known as Kochi, is a vibrant port city with a rich tapestry of cultural influences from its historical trading connections.
  • Your first stop will be the iconic Chinese Fishing Nets, which have been a part of the city’s landscape since the 14th century. These massive cantilevered fishing nets, believed to have been introduced by Chinese explorers, are still used by local fishermen and provide a picturesque and fascinating sight along the shoreline.
  • Next, you will visit St. Francis Church, one of the oldest European churches in India. Built in 1503 by Portuguese Franciscan friars, it is renowned for its simple yet striking architecture and its historical significance as the original burial site of Vasco da Gama before his remains were moved to Lisbon.
  • The tour then continues to the Santa Cruz Basilica, a stunning example of gothic architecture with its beautiful stained-glass windows and impressive interiors. This basilica, originally built by the Portuguese in 1505 and later proclaimed a cathedral by Pope Paul IV in 1558, is one of the eight basilicas in India.
  • As the day draws to a close, you will be treated to a mesmerizing Kathakali dance performance. Kathakali is a traditional dance-drama originating from Kerala, known for its elaborate costumes, intricate makeup, and expressive gestures. The performance narrates stories from Hindu epics such as the Mahabharata and the Ramayana through a captivating blend of dance, music, and acting.
  • Following the dance performance, you will attend a cookery demonstration where you will get to learn about Kerala’s culinary traditions. This interactive session will showcase the use of local spices and ingredients in creating flavorful dishes, offering you a unique insight into the region’s rich gastronomic heritage. You will also have the opportunity to sample some of the delicious creations, rounding off your first day in Cochin with a feast for the senses.

Day 2: Exploring Cochin

  • Start your day with a visit to Kumbalanghi Village, a picturesque eco-tourism destination that offers an authentic glimpse into the traditional village life of Kerala.
  • Located on the outskirts of Cochin, Kumbalanghi is renowned for its sustainable tourism practices and its vibrant community life, deeply rooted in the cultural and ecological heritage of the region.
  • As you arrive in Kumbalanghi, you will be greeted by the warm hospitality of the local villagers. Begin your tour by exploring the village’s unique landscape, characterized by lush paddy fields, serene backwaters, and coconut groves.
  • The villagers will guide you through various traditional activities, starting with coir making. Coir, a natural fiber extracted from the husk of coconuts, is a significant cottage industry in Kerala. Watch skilled artisans deftly weave coir into ropes and mats, and even try your hand at the process under their guidance.
  • Next, immerse yourself in the local fishing culture by participating in crab farming. This hands-on activity allows you to learn about the traditional methods used by the villagers to farm and harvest crabs. You’ll gain insight into the sustainable practices that ensure the health of the local ecosystems while supporting the community’s livelihood.
  • After a morning of engaging village activities, return to Cochin for an exciting afternoon tour. Hop into an autorickshaw for a guided tour of some of Cochin’s most vibrant areas.
  • Your first stop is Marine Drive, a bustling waterfront promenade that offers stunning views of the backwaters and the Kochi skyline. Take a leisurely stroll along the promenade, soaking in the lively atmosphere and watching boats pass by.
  • From Marine Drive, head to Broadway Market, one of the oldest and busiest markets in Cochin. Here, you can explore a myriad of shops and stalls selling everything from spices and textiles to fresh produce and handmade crafts. The market’s narrow lanes and vibrant displays provide a sensory overload, capturing the essence of Cochin’s trading heritage.
  • End your day at the scenic Cherai Beach, located on the northern end of Vypin Island. Cherai Beach is known for its golden sands, gentle waves, and serene backwaters.
  • Arrive in time to watch the sunset, as the sky transforms into a canvas of vibrant colours. Relax on the beach, take a dip in the sea, or simply sit back and enjoy the tranquil ambiance as the sun sets over the horizon, bringing a perfect close to your day of exploration.
